It is very cold, with a long winter and short summer. It is home to farmers and herders. For years,Tibetologists have been studying the local folklore,of which perhaps the most interesting aspect is the dressing of the 17-old girls. This happens when the Tibetan New Year draws near.As this means they may live independently by having male friends, this tradition is much cherished among girls of this age group.
The sun’s ultraviolet turn most people on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau brown, but Tibetan girls have developed an unique way to ‘beat the system”
In order to retain facial freshness, they first rub their faces with butter or sour milk and then wash with milk or bean powder water. When this is done, they sit themselves in front of a mirror to pull fine hairs with silk threads. Finally, they coat their faces from making them work in fields.Instead, they are given highly nutritious food to keep up their beauty. This tradition is still retained today.
According to local tradition, families with girls who have reached the age of 17 hold a dressing-up ceremony for them. Savings are squandered for the purchase of garments and jewelry made of gold, silver, coral and agate. Some jewels are valued tens of thousands of yuan.
On the second day of the first Tibetan month, mothers rise at the call f the day-breaking stars in the sky. They worship the Buddha with fresh milk, flowers and fruit before burning incense and praying for good luck for their daughters. This is followed by mothers giving the girls advice, such as asking them to walk slowly on the third and fourth days, and refrain from talking loudly, and showing greater warmth to their relatives and friends.
Married women whose parents are still alive are invited to dress these girls up.This implies these girls will enjoy the same good luck as these women. Many will come to help, talk and congratulate.
Dressed-up girls, each with nine big pigtails, impress with their maturity and beauty. They wear gold, silver,or ivory rings and bracelets, which are inlaid with gems or corals;earrings made of gold or silver;necklaces each composed of over 100 yellow agates and red coral. When they are put on sheep skin robes with 5-inch rims and lined with red and green satins, and fox hats, the ceremony is over.
The third day of the first Tibetan month is the day for the 17-year-old girls to visit relatives. They rise before sunrise, to kowtow to the Buddha and also to their parents.
When the sun rises above the horizon, they set out accompanied by one 12 or 13-year-old girl who carries gifts for them.If they come across people carrying water, the meeting means good luck and they will present them with hada. When they come across others of the same age group, they will exchange hada.
During their visit to relatives, they exchange gifts.Their relatives generally send them cloth materials or cash. The 17-year-old girls will put the cloth materials on their left arms, while carrying food with the right hand.
On the fourth day of the first Tibetan month, the girls’ parents will prepare food to thank their relatives.Gifts thus given will be displayed. When guests arrive, they sit in a circle to sing and dance. This is followed with dining and winning to their heart’s content.
