The Summer Palace was, as its name suggests, the summer home for the emperor. It is set on a number of beautiful lakes surrounded by incredible gardens, temples, palaces, and bridges. It takes up many acres of land (only slightly smaller than Central Park) but we managed to cover most of it when we were there. We walked around the main lake, through the temples and gardens. This was taken from the top of the main temple overlooking the lake. It’s hard to see, but off to the right in the distance there is a water tower and to the right of that is the Great Wall climbing the mountainside.
